Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization or IASTM is a technique using specific tools to detect and treat fibrous adhesions and scar tissue accumulated within soft tissue structures. It has a number of applications for reducing pain and stimulating faster healing of conditions such as tendinopathy, muscular trigger points, plantar fasciitis, scarring, and more.
The technique was derived from Gua Sha, a traditional Chinese healing technique that involves the use of a smooth-edged tool, much like IASTM tools, to stroke along the skin with pressure to create petechia.
IASTM is commonly known as Graston, which is a technique of IASTM.
